God of War 3 Remastered looks absolutely spectacular

I’m not entirely enamoured with the amount of attention remakes and remasters are getting on current-gen consoles. It sometimes seems like a complete waste to focus so much energy and time on upscaling and optimising old games to look better – so that the collective majority can maybe play it again. God of War falls under the banner of “Why is this getting remastered?”, but even I have to admit that it looks rather gorgeous.

God of War 3 Remastered is landing on PS4 in July, and I wouldn’t blame you for forgetting it was actually getting an overhaul. Following on from the disappointing reception of Ascension, God of War doesn’t feel like the blockbuster name that sells Sony consoles anymore – which makes this remaster even more of a head scratcher. It could be all smoke and mirrors for a possible new reveal at E3 – but for now we’re left with another version of, arguably, the best entry in the series yet.
And as much as I deplore the practice, I have to admit that it’s looking pretty slick. The texture upgrades and locked 60FPS really bring the game to life – especially when going chain to hook with the god of the underworld, Hades.
Those hooks! And we’re not even talking about Pudge here! The remaster brings a healthy dose of eye candy to the table, but I’m not sure it’s enough to convince me of a second purchase. To be honest, I feel that way about most remasters – but I do appreciate the chance it gives those who may have missed out on games like this on the previous generation.
God of War 3 Remastered is already available for pre-order ahead of its July 17th launch. Will you be rising through Mount Olympus once again, or has Kratos’ journey been wrapped up and finished for you for years already?
